Refer to the course syllabus under "General Policies Regarding Graded Material" for important notes regarding problem sets. Reminder, as stated in syllabus: SUBMISSIONS NOT HANDEDTO COURSE STAFF (E.G. SLIPPED UNDER DOOR, PLACED IN MAILBOX) WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE MARKED LATE.
If after working on the problems, you feel you may need some help, please don’t hesitate to see the instructor or TA. Instructor office hours are 10-11:30 MW, and TAs will conduct the problem sessions on Friday, Sept 11th where you can seek their help

1. (30 points) [Reading assignments]
- (15 points) Read pg 10-28 in the textbook (P&H) which describes the components, boards, peripherals and chips inside the computer and some of their manufacturing processes. Check Sec 1.9 (pg 44) to see if you understand all the key terms. Summarize the key points and details NOT covered in class.
- (15 points) Read pg 60-83 in the textbook (P&H) which describes the performance issues, other metrics (MIPS etc) and benchmarks (SPEC, whetstone, dhrystone etc). . Check Sec 2.10 (pg 89) to see if you understand all the key terms. Summarize the key points and details NOT covered in class.
- (40 points) [Metrics, Parameters, Benchmarking, Performance games] Do Exercise 2.13 of chapter 2 (on page 92, P&H). You need NOT do the last part of the question which asks: which machine would you purchase ….
- (30 points) [Amdahl’s law] Do Exercise 2.44 of chapter 2 (on page 102, P&H).
