Why ? Because of the installed base of RIP routers
Provides VLSM support, authentication, multicasting, “wire-sharing” by multiple routing domains, tags to flag EGP/BGP routes. Format: fig 10.10
Uses reserved fields in RIPv1 header. Subnet mask field allows specifying VLSMs
Authentication is done by using the first entry for authentication instead of specifying a destination-metric pair
Wire-sharing: many subnets hanging off a single backbone (eg: FDDI backbone in RPI)
