Arthur C. Sanderson received his B.S. degree from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1968, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1970 and 1972, respectively.
From 1968 to 1970, he was a Research Engineer at Westinghouse Research Laboratories and worked on design and simulation of solid-state electronic devices. From 1972 to 1973 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, and conducted research in the areas of signal processing and pattern recognition. From 1973 to 1987, he was a faculty member at Carnegie-Mellon University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 1980 to 1987 he was Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He participated in the founding and development of the Robotics Institute at CMU, and was Associate Director of the Robotics Institute from 1980 to 1987. As Associate Director, he coordinated many of the research initiatives in the Institute. From 1975 to 1977, he was on leave from CMU as Visiting Professor and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City, Mexico. From 1985 to 1987, he was on leave from CMU and held the position of Director of Information Sciences Research at Philips Laboratories, Briarcliff Manor, NY. As Research Director, he developed new technical programs in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Architecture, Computer-Aided Design, and Robotics and Flexible Automation. In 1987, he joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as Professor and served as Department Head of the Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering Department from 1987 to 1994. At RPI, he was Co-Director of the New York State Center fro Advanced Technology in Automation and Robotics from 1988-1990, Co-Principal Investigator in the RPI/NASA Center for Intelligent Robotics Systems in Space Exploration, and is Co-Principal Investigator of the Rensselaer Agile Manufacturing Research Institute. He is currently Principal Investigator of the Interactive Learning Modules Project for development of educational multimedia materials in design and manufacturing engineering sponsored under the Technology Reinvestment Program by NSF and ARPA, and a member of the steering committee of the International Center for Multimedia Education at Rensselaer.
Dr. Sanderson is the author of over 250 technical publications and proceedings. His current research interests include robotics and automation systems, sensor-based control, computer vision, and applications of knowledge-based systems. He was President of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society from 1989-1990. He was Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Robotics and Automation from 1984-1989, Program Chairman for the 1987 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, Chairman of the 1989 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control, Co-Chair of the 1992 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, and Chairman of the 1995 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Task Planning. He is a Fellow of IEEE and AAAS, and a member of AAAI, ASEE, and SME.
During 1996, Dr. Sanderson was on sabbatical at the Intelligent Robot Laboratory, Institute of Information Sciences and Electronics, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Japan.
