Biography
Zhaoran
(Rena) Huang joined the faculty of the department of Electrical, Computer and
Systems Engineering (ECSE) as an Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in October 2004. She earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from
School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Georgia Institute of
Technology in December 2003. During her Ph.D. study, she focused on integration
of high speed optical interconnection using thin film semiconductor devices and
polymer waveguides. She worked for Microsystem Packaging Research Center (PRC) from
January 2004 to September 2004 as a postdoc fellow.
She explored the design and integration of end-to-end Optical Interconnection
on SOP while she worked for PRC.

Research
Interests and Current Research Efforts:

Left to right:
(1) a single metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetector. The detector is of
~ 1μm thick; (2) a hexagonal array of MSM PDs for free space optical
communication; (3) a design of a SiGe based heterojunction
transistor electro-optic modulator; (4) mode profile of the EO modulator.
2.
Optical
waveguides

Left to right:
(1) a SEM photo of a photonic crystal waveguide; (2) photonic crystal lattice
of 300nm; and (3) a multi-mode waveguide on SOI waveguide for biological
sensing.
3.
Electronic/Optoelectronic/RF
Packaging

We developed a new
packaging scheme in which the optical elements are placed along the RF antenna
radiation path. Miniaturized dual mode RF and free space optical communication
node is developed.
From left to
right: (1) transmitter board including both RF/FSO channels; (2) receiver board
including both RF/FSO channels; (3) experimental setup for simultaneous RF and
FSO communication; (4) eye diagram for optical receiver at 2.5 Gbps when
antenna is fed by 0 dBm and 7 dBm power.

We have invented
double-sided fluidic microchannel cooling structure
for miniaturized on-chip heat dissipation. Left figure: an embedded micro air
channel in polymer overcoat fabricated using sacrificial polymer. Right figure:
an array of micro channels on a chip.
