Screen-Capture is probably the easiest and cleanest way to obtain images for HTML documents. Simply display it on your screen and "capture" it as a file. Thus tables, icons, pictures... literally anything on the screen becomes a potential HTML image.
The best way to capture images is to run an X-Emulator, like PC-X-Ware, on a PC. This allows you to use the UNIX Snapshot tool to grab images from Excel or Paintbrush.
Snapshot is a UNIX screen-capture tool that is easy to use and master. It is invaluable for "stealing" icons and images from Unix application and even other HTML pages.
In MS-Windows, there is a screen capture routine. Simply select the window you want to capture and press Alt-PrintScrn. The image will be ported to the clip-board. Next, Open up Pain-Brush, paste the image, and crop it to suit your needs. You can then convert it using one other the techniques described, or port it to your Unix account (via FTP, PPP, ect.)
There are other screen capture programs available and the all work in
a similar manner.
