    Core Engineering

All students in Engineering (ENGR) should contact Patricia Rickert , located in JEC 3018 in Core Engineering, for their advisors as well as all matters concerning ENGR classes. All Engineering (ENGR) students are reminded that they must officially declare their majors in the third semester (sophomore year).

So, your roommate claims that a friend said that it’s OK to take Digital Electronics during the same semester as Diff Eq, as long as you have a good grade in Physics II; but you’re a bit skeptical. Who do you call?

First, read the course descriptions and the curriculum checklists in the RPI catalog and also on the ECSE web site,. Second, send me an email or stop by for a visit, or both. I know the rules; I can get the answers. I can also assist you in several other ways by helping you:

  • plan your course selection for the coming semester, year or even for several semesters
  • change from a single major to a dual major, or switch majors
  • find a summer internship at a university or national laboratory
  • negotiate the maze of paperwork required by the Institute
  • assess your progress in meeting Institute requirements, i.e. the H&SS Core
  • I am also available if your regular faculty advisor is on sabbatical or is otherwise not available to you.

    Graduate Advising

MS and/or PhD students in Electrical Engineering and Computer & Systems Engineering are not assigned to a particular faculty member and are encouraged to meet with faculty to choose an advisor for their thesis. An advisor must be selected within the first six weeks of the first semester of study. Students with Research Assistantships will automatically be advised by the professor providing the assistantship. If that professor is not in the ECSE department, the student must choose a co-advisor from ECSE, and it is the responsibility of the student to keep both faculty informed of research progress and course selection. MEng students in Electrical and Computer & Systems Engineering are typically advised by the Director of ECSE Masters Programs, although they are free to choose any ECSE faculty member as an advisor.

Students in the Electric Power Engineering department will be assigned a specific advisor upon entering the program. All students fill out a Plan of Study that must be approved by the advisor and either the Director of Masters Programs or Director of Doctoral Programs.

Plans of study must be updated whenever a change to the plan is made. Students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their advisor to dicuss thesis and/or course progress. All full-time students are required to register for a minimum of 12 credits each semester they are in attendance. Students who have been awarded Teaching Assistantships may carry a minimum load of 9 credits per semester.

Do you need help making your Schedule?

Do you feel stress during registration? Do you find that by the time you enter your classes into SIS system all the class sections that you wanted are filled up. The RPI Scheduler was designed to help students with the task of figuring out which classes can fit together with each other, and still result in a schedule that meets the students' needs. This feature allows students to limit the times during which they were willing to have class and also discard sections they did not want to register for. This Applet allows you to see all the possibilities when arranging your schedule. Many times students would overlook a combination of course timings that would be better than what they could come up with. The RPI Database is generated using data posted by the registrar on SIS .

What are the Design Elective Options?

Design Course Options for EE and CSE available each term will be posted on the class hour schedule.
    Additional H&SS Requirements

All EE, CSE and EPE students must take at least one H&SS course from a list of courses prepared by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to specifically address accreditation requirements from ABET

    New Topic Courses

New topics courses for each term will be posted on the main advising page when the schedule for the coming term is finalized.

(Note that ECSE-6xxx courses can only be taken by grad students and eligible undergraduates.)
