ECSE Advising FAQ
David Nichols
Advisor
Q: How do I know who my advisor is?

A: Look in the upper right hand corner of your CAPP. The name(s) of your advisor(s) are listed there. You will have an advisor for each of your majors. If you are in ROTC you will also have a ROTC advisor. If you are on a sports team you may have an additional advisor appointed by the athletic department.

Q: I want to change my major to another department. Will I get a new advisor?

A: Yes. When you file the Change of Major/Status form with Core Engineering (3018 JEC) an advisor in your new major will be assigned.

Grades/Grading

Q: Can I take a P in one of my ECSE electives?

A: No. P/NC may only be used for Free Electives and one non-depth HASS course. If you choose to take a P in one of your ECSE electives it will become a Free Elective.

Q: Well, how about a non-ECSE course that’s required, like Chem 1?

A: Required courses cannot be taken as P/NC.

Q: Can I repeat a course in another college and have the grade replace the grade I earned at RPI?

A: No. The grade replacement policy is only possible when a Rensselaer course is repeated at Rensselaer.

Q: Suppose I pass a course but when I repeat it I get a lower grade. Which grade is used for my GPA?

A: The most recent grade replaces the previous grade(s) in the calculation of your GPA.

Q: Suppose I fail the course on the second try but passed it on the first try. Do I have to take the course a third time?

A: Yes. The most recent grade is the one of record. If the course is a required course and you fail it upon repeating it, you must take it again.

HASS Core

Q: What are the rules about the HASS Core?

A: The rules are given on the HASS section of the CAPP report. However, you should also read the requirements as given in the first few pages of the HASS section of the catalog. (For 2008-2009 they are on page 267.)

Q: Can I take HASS courses at another college during the summer?

A: Yes. You will need prior approval from the Director of Student Services of the School of HASS in Sage. You will also need to consider the number of credits you plan to transfer. Most colleges grant 3 credits for HASS courses; all HASS course at RPI are 4 credits. Since the rules for the HASS Core are written in terms of 4 credit courses you may find it difficult to use a 3-credit course to help satisfy the HASS requirements. See the Transfer Course section below.

CAPP Reports

Q: My CAPP report is all messed up. Will I be able to graduate if it doesn’t have my courses in the right place?

A: Yes. The CAPP report is a worksheet and not an official document of the Institute. Use it as a guide. If you would like to have the course listings changed visit David Nichols (6046 JEC) and he will see to it that the course on the CAPP report are put in their proper places.
