Workshop Scope:

This workshop will present and discuss recent results that capture the performance and design tradeoffs when multiple layers interact, as they do, in wireless multi-hop networks. The layered architecture view of networks has allowed various experts to work independently to optimize the performance at their level of abstraction. Wireless multi-hop networks have challenged the benefits of this approach, at least from a performance perspective. The fact that in most sensor networks the performance and purpose are tightly coupled with a physical phenomenon increases the coupling between the top and bottom layers of the reference network protocols stack. Furthermore, we are witnessing an increasing interest in terms of what the design of the Internet would be if we have the chance to do it all from scratch.

Examples of topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Joint optimization of multiple layers
  • Joint modelling and performance evaluation of multiple layers
  • Communication/computation methods and abstractions
  • Techniques and models of medium access, aggregation, routing, and compression that explicitly account for multiple layers
  • Designs leveraging recent technologies (e.g. software radio) and their performance
  • Designs allowing co-existence in crowded shared spectrum
  • Network reliability issues including quality of service
  • Multi-layer security in a distributed environment
