The full pathname of the icde script you are executing appears to be:

	/inp_Cadence2/Cadence9401/tools/dfII/bin/icde

I ran it under your userid and was not able to reproduce the problem
where it complains about the license file. I did notice that you
set the env variable LM_LICENSE_FILE to be "/cie01/pspice/license.dat".
It's possible that is messing you up. The Cadence license server that
is running on inp.cie is running out of the directory /inp1/Cadence9304
and the license file it is using is

	/inp1/Cadence9304/share/license/license.72340c99

If you are still getting the license error msg, try setting
LM_LICENSE_FILE to that path and see what happens.

I see your ~/.cshrc and ~/.login files have changed recently.
Perhaps the change has broken Cadence for your account.

Well, my .login and .cshrc files keep changing because
of continuous tweaking etc.

The licensing part problem arose from something which I
can't replicate now. In fact. I can't seem to recall how
I got it.

Regarding .login/.cshrc/LM_LICENSE_FILE etc. I have now
tried at least three different accounts and I get the
same problem. Though, I was able to run "openbook"
which is their online manual. I found something regarding a
patch which is needed on the SPARCs to run Cadence Software.

I have copied the blurb at the end of this message. When I
executed the given instructions I get the patch numbers in a
different style. So you might want to make sure about this
patch thing.

Thanks,

Atul

PS:

SunOS 4. x requires an X server patch to run the Cadence software.
You can determine if you need to install a patch now by
displaying the status of the X server on the workstation.
Find the checksum of the file by typing

sum filename_of_xserver

For example, you might type

sum /usr/openwin/bin/xnews

and compare it with the following output.

Checksum	Patch Number Software
00466 2320 100444-18	Openwindows 3.0

Note: Do not use Patch 100444-35 or 100444-37.
For SPARC 10s, install patch 100726-10.

Hi Graham,

I was going through an online manual which stated the source of
the following message:

>*WARNING* failed to lock file CDS.log. Lock service on hostname is not available

Reason: cdsd is not running on hostname

It looks like cdsd is not running on unix.cie.rpi.edu. I
tried to look for it but couldn't find it. Why do we need
unix.cie.rpi.edu to run Cadence. Can't the whole thing be
run from inp?

Hi Graham,

I see that "cdsd" is running on inp. I couldn't figure that
out because it is probably controlled by cdslmd. We have got
another idea. The above-mentioned warning message is always

"*WARNING* failed to lock file /tmp_mnt/net/usr2/grads/garg/CDS.log.1 Lock service on unix.cie.rpi.edu is not available. "

So, it always tries to write the CDS.log.* files in the home
directory which is controlled by the server on
unix.cie.rpi.edu. Since it has no cdsd running on it, it
can't lock those files. I don't know how intelligent this
idea is.

If it really sounds good then can you try making the home
directory of "drhodes" (we use this user account as a guest
account) to something controlled by inp (e.g.,
/inp_FRISC/vtitools/users). This will help in checking that
theory.

We have made progress in connecting to a Cadence
representative but a lot of red tape is still keeping
us from a one-on-one with them (need to fill out a
lot of forms and stuff).

Thanks for your time,

Atul

No matter what the Cadence folks tell you, it is quite bogus for
them to require that your home dir be on a fileserver that they
have a daemon for; that is, unless they supply the cdsd daemon for
free to their users, it is unreasonable for them to restrict the
types of fileserver you can use by not supplying you a daemon
for Ultrix.

It is indeed the case. I think they do supply daemons for
other machines but they don't mention this home directory
thing any place. Hans suddenly thought up of this problem.

So the initial problem seems to have gone now. I can try
bringing up stuff from inside the main window. Once
we finish this training we might ask you to move
some of our home directories to the same place.

Good news. Hans' suddenly thought up one possible problem with the

that elusive Command Interpreter Window. Tomorrow I will

The problem was that at startup Cadence looked for a "cdsd" server on the
fileserver which contained the user's home directory. For us this fileserver
is on unix.cie.rpi.edu which wasn't running "cdsd" (this program is
supplied by Cadence and was only running on inp). So graham moved the
home directory to inp.cie.rpi.edu and after that it ran
without any problem.

Professor MacDonald,

I am contacting you regarding the problem that you could not
open Cadence software.

I am sorry that it has been such a difficult to communicate to
each other. I will try contacting you again tomorrow.

When you invoke our software, it requires that you
run "cdsd" on every machine (Unix hosts) that you
store Cadence data. This deamon function is locking
files so that only 1 person can have edit access to
a file at a given time. To start this deamon, type
the following on each machine that you store Cadence
data or user's home directory:

	/tools/dfII/bin/cdsd &

To check if the deamon is running, type:

	/tools/dfII/bin/cdsStatus

You need to run "cdsd" on the host that it complained
that it could not lock the CDS.log.x file. Usually,
this happens because it tries to lock the CDS.log file
in the user home directory.

If you want to write this file to a different host, you can
use the -log option along with the executable. For example,

	icde -log /tmp/CDS.log &

Hi Dave,

I thought to check with you before contacting Cadence hotline. So if
you recall anything about the following please let me know:

Cadence online help seems to require FrameMaker. I don't
see framemaker installed on our system. I am not sure if it
comes bundled with Cadence. Do you remember seeing any
FrameMaker coupon with the cadence boxes.

Thanks,

Atul

I do not remember seeing FrameMaker on your systems.
I never saw the boxes because I did not do the installation.
Not sure who did it.

Professor McDonald,

If you still have problems using Cadence software you
can call the hotline or you can go ahead to send in
the problem description and any related errors message to

  crc_customers@cadence.com

By the way, I heard Rensselaer is a very nice & good
higher education institute. I always want to send my
daughter there but living in California she does not
want to go to Troy, New York.

Thanks for your response letting me know that you
can open our software.

Loan -

Before signing off on CADENCE installation...we seem to be having a
problem with a FrameMaker license. Is there something we should do to
make it work? Was this covered under the original purchase of CADENCE
under the educational license? One of the real advantages of CADENCE
is apparently the ability to export to FrameMaker for documentation.

Hi,

We are trying to bring up Cadence on our system and so far it is
going very well. I am having a bit of a problem with "openbook".
Whenever I open it or go to a new page it sends a message to the
screen which goes "Unable to open link bitmap file". It is
annoying because I have to press OK button everytime. What
file is it trying to access?

Thanks,

Atul Garg

Prof. J. F. McDonald,

You do not seem to be in our database and I am unsure of which
university you are located at. We do have a list of university contacts
for each university on our program. I would need to know where that is
so that I can find out if you are in our program or if you need to contact
someone else for help. Please let us know as soon as possible so that we
can get you some help if you are on list or let you know what needs to be
done.

Hi Graham,

Can you please replace /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Iview with
the following file? All I have done is commented out
all the lines which are creating problems with Cadence.
The problem is ocurring because the /cie05/powerview/docs
directory doesn't exist.

Thanks,
