The Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the area of real-time person and object tracking for mass transit environments. The goal is to design real-time algorithms for passenger and baggage tracking at a realistic mock-up of an airport security screening checkpoint. The project is supported by the US DHS Center of Excellence on Explosives Detection, Mitigation and Response (ALERT).

The postdoc will work under the supervision of Dr. Richard Radke at Rensselaer, and work closely with other performers on the project from different sites. The work will primarily be performed on the Rensselaer campus in Troy, NY but will also involve regular trips to the simulated screening checkpoint in Burlington, MA (2.5 hours from Troy, 30 minutes from Boston).

The position is available January 1, 2017 and is expected to last one year from the date of hire. The research will involve the design and calibration of multi-camera networks (both fixed-focus and pan-tilt-zoom); image/video stitching; person tracking and re-identification from above and from the side; object tracking (e.g., luggage on conveyor belts); person-to-object association; and anomaly detection such as lost or stolen bags. An example of previous work by the PI related to the current project can be seen below:

A recent Ph.D. degree in computer science or electrical and/or computer engineering is required. Critical skills include familiarity with production-quality computer vision and scientific programming software packages (e.g., C++, OpenCV) and the ability to update, integrate, and write code for real-time video processing. Experience with image processing, machine learning, computer graphics/animation, software engineering, game design, and/or GPU/parallel implementations is a plus. The candidate must also have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, and be prepared to work closely with colleagues from both academia and government.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, CV, and 3 references to Dr. Radke at rjradke@ecse.rpi.edu. An alternate mailing address is given below (but e-mail is preferred).
